UMHYGGJA

Umhyggja is an organization that works to improve the well-being of chronically ill children and their families. The organization is staffed by parents of chronically ill children and professionals within the healthcare system.

Umhyggja originated from the Nordic association Nordisk förening for syke barns behove , NOBAB. The Icelandic branch of the Nordic association was founded in May 1980, but a few years later the name was changed to Umhyggja. The original founders of Umhyggja were professionals from the pediatric wards of Landspítali and Landakotsspítali, and the association was intended to improve the welfare of children in hospitals and protect the social rights of chronically ill children. Gradually, the activities developed and more and more parents joined the association. The biggest change occurred in February 1996 when eight parent associations joined Umhyggja, but today the number of member associations has increased to 18.
